05/09/2009 Burton 1sts (M) v Finchfield

9 - 1 win

Burton's pre-season campaign started in earnest with a home fixture against Finchfield. With the Midlands Division 1 campaign only 4 weeks away Burton have focused hard on improving their fitness levels as well as having the luxury of 3 new faces join the squad. Last Years captain, Graeme Hamblen has decided to step down following last season's remarkable unbeaten year but other than that the squad still remains much the same and still under the tutorage of England international, Scott Cordon.

Confidence was high going into the game and with a new formation being tried out the game did start tentatively. Ash Wheldon and Paul Scarborough, two new recruits both started the game and can be very pleased with their efforts and with Martin Jarvis returning to full fitness in goals things looked solid throughout.

As ever, goals flowed for the red & green and Mark Northcott continued where he left off last season scoring 4 including a couple of trademark drag flicks. Jamie Cooper, enjoying a new lease of life in a free role grabbed a hat trick, the last one being an unstoppable reverse stick strike into the top corner and the rout was finished off by Rich Stringer, now the elder statesman of the side, grabbing a brace.

All in all, a confident display and with the fitness levels getting pushed harder still over the next few weeks Burton can be very pleased with how things are shaping up and can look forward to a new season.
